Painting: Bacchus and Ariadne, 1521-3

In this lesson students are asked to describe the painting, paying attention to colours, layout, costumes, animals, mythological characters, body language and posture, etc... We may divide the figures into groups, telling similarities and differences. We could also imagine to jump into the painting and then describe what we can see, hear, smell and touch. This picture by Titian was commissioned by Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. It is based on texts by Catullus and Ovid (whose quotes we can read) and it depicts Bacchus falling in love with Ariadne at first sight. The artist illustrated human anatomy with identifiable muscles in action, which students may name.
